Method handbook
Google index checking handbook
Published · By IndexChex
In brief
Checking whether a URL is in Google's index means confirming that Google has stored the page and can serve it in search. Site owners use Search Console's URL Inspection tool; anyone else uses search queries such as site: or the quoted URL, or a bulk checker that runs those queries across thousands of URLs.
Overview
This handbook documents the practical ways to find out whether a given URL is in Google's index, and how far each method can be trusted. It is written for SEO practitioners, site owners and link builders who need a yes or no answer for one page, a hundred pages or tens of thousands.
Two families of method exist. The first belongs to the site owner: Google Search Console reports what Google knows about URLs inside a verified property. The second is open to anyone: running search queries against Google and looking for the URL in the results. Owner tools are detailed but cannot see other people's sites. Public queries can see any site but return approximate answers. Most real workflows combine both, and the guide to checking whether a URL is indexed walks through when to use which.
Scale changes the problem. One URL can be checked by hand in a browser. A list of several thousand backlinks cannot, which is where bulk index checking tools and APIs come in. The site is published by IndexChex, which makes one such tool; the IndexChex index checker page describes it, and the rest of the handbook is written to be useful whichever tool a reader picks.

How to use this handbook
Readers with a single page to verify should start with the method comparison, then read the page for the method they choose. Readers working through link lists should start with bulk checking and the backlink page, then the accuracy section, since false negatives matter more when thousands of URLs are involved. Related reference material lives elsewhere in the IndexChex reference network, including the glossary entry for index checkers.
Scope and limits of this handbook
The handbook covers Google only. Bing, Yandex and other engines keep separate indexes with their own webmaster tools, and a page indexed by one engine says nothing about the others. It also stops at the question of whether a URL is indexed: ranking, traffic and visibility in AI answers are separate questions that an index check cannot settle. Where a page relies on Google's documentation, the source is listed at the bottom of that page so readers can confirm the current wording themselves, since Search Console features and limits change over time.
